At the fringes of this topic...
I have an elderly Welsh clarinettist friend
who is typically loquacious, if not mildly argumentative.
He once launched himself on a diatribe again there
being to too many professional women clarinettists.
I do not share his view, but kept quiet.
When we next met I gave him a composite tape
of the complete Mozart Concerto played successively by
31 clarinettists of several nationalities (and only one woman) .
- all neatly spliced together to make a whole -
and suggested that he might like to try to identify
the players. He declined to participate!
The ear has a short memory. While listening to it
it is very easy to say I like or dislike the playing,
the tone or the balance of the recording,
but with a few exceptions it is very difficult
to identify individual players with any degree
of certainty.

I still have this tape and the list of players
if anyone wishes to try it.

Mike Bryant.
