George, I am not in the business of chewing anyone up. I think that
people are giving this matter the consideration it deserves and I'm
staying out of it. And certainly, no one should reject any kind of a
rational answer to this question simply because they have a fear of
being argued with. Frankly, that is part of the reason why we are in
this position in the first place; i.e., a vocabulary has grown up like a
chancer on a tree and very few people have questioned its descriptive
terminology.

I think that many of the right people are doing so in a constructive,
intelligent way. No one is happier than I that clarinet players are
thinking seriously about this question.

Besides, I'm thinking about buying a brand new basset horn and getting
back to playing again. No clarinet, mind you, just basset horn. And so
I have to figure out how to get that nice dark sound on a cocobola wood
b.h. with a wooden bell and a brillhart white mouthpiece with a black
patch, just like the one Woody Herman had in 1942.
