I just went and looked at what Mazzeo said Stravinsky said about this
instruction, and read that Mazzeo said that Stravinsky said that you
shouldn't darken the sound, just reduce it at that point. ("Subito piu'
piano" in other words.)

But I 'darken' the atmosphere, too, as I'm entitled:-)

Stravinsky rewrote himself several times in his life. It was almost his
character to change his character.
