This does make some sense to me. Instead of pitch intervals, you
are talking about 'tone intervals'. Which is to say, the intervals are
more important than the choice of tonic or 'starting point'.

By the way, in the pigeon recital that I posted about a moment ago,
the instruments were a trio: bass clarinet, A clarinet, and flute. The
bass did _not_ play the pigeons cooing or any such. So the higher
pitched instruments were (presumably) supposed to play 'dark'.
