A difficult to answer, but of course highly generative, question for you
to ponder for yourself. You know what 'upper harmonics' means, do you?
(I don't mean that as a put-down.)

If I try to answer it explicitly for me, I might say things like, more
lip damping, longer free reed, lower tongue, or any combination of those
that reduced the upper harmonic component of the sound, depending on
the reed.

"Darken the sound." I assumed that you were talking about that piece,
since your enquiry so closely followed that instruction.

Well, do that, knowing that it's a dangerous move if you want to make a
judgement. You never know who you might get playing it.
