Since I played only narrow bore basset horn, I cannot make any
intelligent contrast between the mechanics of the two instruments. Now
why I preferred the narrow bored instrument is an entirely different
question. The wide bored instrument of LeBlanc and then much later
Buffet were developed as ways to get around the intonation and
resistance problems of the narrow bored instrument and they did that
beautifully. However, what they produced, in my opinion, was an alto
clarinet in F and it does not have the plaintive character of a basset
horn. It is a lovely instrument but to call it a basset horn is a
marketing not a technical statement.
