As has been pointed out, correct reed strength is VERY dependent upon the
mouthpiece. I play two mouthpieces regularly: an O'Brien crystal OB*, on
which I play a Mitchell Lurie 4 or even 4 1/2, and a Selmer C85 115 on
which I use only a Vandoren 2 1/2 or Mitchell Lurie 3! Each mouthpiece
responds in its own way. In general, though close facing = stiff reed,
open facing @-----. Also, long facing = stiff reed, short facing =
soft reed. It gets confusing with mouthpieces like the Vandoren B-45, with
its open tip and long facing - but it averages out to a medium strength
reed! Play what responds well and sounds good on your setup. If they wear
out quickly, change brands or practice less!

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
