Well, I'm not Dan Leeson, anyway I will write a little about
Basset horn reed.
I have a Buffet's basset.(wide bore) I play it with Vandoren B44
alto clarinet mouthpiece and Vandoren traditional 3 reed. This
setting works very well for me. I've tried Vandoren's alto sax
reed,(3.0) however I felt it sounds very thin.
My friend plays a Selmer's basset.(narrow bore) She plays it
with Woodwinds Larry Combs model mouthpiece for Bb soprano clarinet.
(as for reeds, I'm not sure what brand she uses. Probably Vandoren,
I think.)
IMHO, alto sax reed for basset horn doesn't work well as tenor
sax reed for bass clarinet. As written in the above paragraph, I
think it sounds thiner and less rich than one would expect for basset
horn. I don't know why. Probably the profiles of reeds are so
different. (see http://www.vandoren.com/)
