Gary,

When I tried the Buffet alto I noticed the Eb on the body, and appreciated
the extra expense they must go to to do it that way. As for the motivation
to use that design, I'd guess it would be both the timbre and the
durability. I ended up with a Selmer alto and you can hear a slight
difference in the character of the Eb note (it's on the bell). Also the
linkage to the mechanism can get messed up. However, I wonder if that extra
length contributes to the B sounding a little stuffy.

Vito sells two versions of its bass clarinets, one with the Eb on the bell
and one with the Eb on the body. I think durability would be the motivation
there.

Somewhere I also have one of those low E bass clarinets and it does have the
low E on the bell also; it's pretty short. However, it sounds really good,
and the tone of the B at the break is really good. It's a Selmer, and I
don't think they were particularly cheap; they were just made that way back
then. It has two separate octave keys too, like an oboe.
