thumb is not completely closing the key which it is connected to on the
top of the clarinet. I'll bet you have a leak somewhere and that is the
first place I would look.

Subject: [kl] Upper range difficulties
I had my aging Buffet overhalled about a month ago. After a vacation of
about 3 weeks I returned home to Alice Springs and began work in earnest
on a solo for the yearly Eisteddfod contest. I've been dismayed to
discover that frequently my high E, Eb, and D come out as squeaks. I use a
standard fingering, L2,L3, thumb & registar key. Tinkering with the
fingering I discovered that putting down L1 seems to make these notes pop
out clearly - though out of tune. This doesn't happen using a plastic
Yahama so it's got to be the bloody clarinet. The top joint seems tight
when I blow through with the left hand sealing the bottom of the joint.
Any suggestions on the difficulty? The repairman is a thousand
kilometers away so it's impossible to send it back and have it in time to
perform with the Buffet in the contest. Besides, I already discovered a
very weak spring on the Eb key right hand and adjusted it myself, so my
confidence in the repair person is diminished. There are times when the
upper notes come through as normal, but more frequently they don't and I
suppose I could use the Yahama for the contest, though the tone produced
isn't as good.
