It changes into a badly out of tune bass clarinet that that only goes down
to low E and/or one that is so long that you cannot reach the keys with
your right hand!

By the way, there are out there some early, cheap bass clarinets that only
go down to low E and have THAT key on the bell. Conn, for one, made some.
