But you'd have to say that that is a very 'classical' problem. It
applies to any attempt to master the musical style of a notated
tradition, whether baroque, 'classical' or romantic. And really, jazz
wasn't intended to be written out in that way.

Good and committed classical musicians in fact tend to play
jazz-oriented compositions with too much rather than too little
enthusiasm, I'd say. The difficulty is to have nuances like 'swing' be
just a part of the style, rather than being a surface feature. Because
we're not used to doing it, swing comes out like a surface feature, and
thus sounds too meaningful and inhabited.
