And to continue Dan's thought, there is still another choice. My Buffet
alto clarinet has the low Eb opening on the body on the instrument and has
a vent hole (with no keywork) on the bell. (If you cover the vent hole,
the instrument sounds a low D.) I believe that this results in a low Eb
with a similar timbre to the notes above it, but I don't know if that was
the motivation for this design.
