Perhaps you're cross with me rather than with Roger, whose post I took
to be essentially lighthearted. Where was the valium?

But much less absolutely necessary in a very large part of the
profession, I submit, than you implied by what you wrote.

We tended to have a lot of, 'it's essential that you be able to X,' 'you
should always do Y,' here, much of it in my view counterproductive.

As I say, I think he was being lighthearted.

I think we're all happy that you improved your A transposition skills.

Just don't tell us that we're doing something wrong, or are necessarily
unprofessional, if we prefer to have a part written out rather than to
practise our transposition. Or lay down the law about what we 'should'
be able to do, in order to have any self-respect as musicians.

You can talk about your own experience, or *suggest* anything, of
course:-)
