Chris,

I play this study (#5) at about 120-130 mm alla breve - on the half note,
and use a triplet feeling on the eighth notes. By the way, my copy of the
method dates from the mid 1950s, when I was in high school. I had a
parakeet as a pet. Joey would perch on the music stand and chew at the
music while I was practicing. The tops of several pages, especially the
harder etudes and the solos, are pretty well chewed up!
