Nah! no flames on that. It is personal interpretation stuff. IMHO, Benny
played *all* the changes in a more arpeggio style than did Shaw. But, Shaw
had a more lyrical (if that is the right word) melodic phrasing technique
that was breathtaking to hear. It is written somewhere that Benny and Artie
once discussed their views on the clarinet and Goodman sensing Shaw's troubled
outlook and professed on-off attitude with the clarinet, pointed out the
clarinet is all, the clarinet is everything. Later when Shaw abruptly dis-
banded and Benny was told Shaw wasn't even practicing anymore, Benny said:
(I paraphrase) Aw, that's too bad, he should at least be playing his scales.
