I have an incredibly talented student (the only one with this kind of talent
I have ever taught) who is a very fine euphonium player. He wants to be a
band director and he has learned to play saxophone and bass clarinet. He
plays with a great sound on bass clarinet and did the bc solo work in
Gregson's Festivo this year. Playing bass clarinet has not hurt his sound on
euphonium. I think it just depends on the person, but I will say in 28 years
of teaching, I have never taught anyone like this. I do not encourage
doubling much unless it is a very advanced player and they double only in
their instrument. By the way, this kid plays trombone as well and can roll
better than all but my first chair snare drummer. I digressed, but his
facial muscles have not been affrected by doubling.
