Fred, I understand your fears completely - I've done my share of driving
at night in desert terrain (NM, CO, TX, OK), as well as driven from NM to
MD and back during the winter. I can at least hope to put some of your
fears to rest about deserted roads. If you stay on state highways and
interstates, you have little to fear. Granted, traffic, especially at
night, is pretty trim in this area of the country, but in my experience,
it's not often that you will be the sole soul out there. It's not
uncommon for those who live in the area to do such driving at NIGHT,
especially in the summer, because it is much cooler. A prime advantage of
this is the car not running so hot, which is safer, and being able to fit
a tad more gas in your tank, since the heat hasn't caused it to expand (or
so I've heard *shrug*).

I've done drives between southern NM and CO and/or OK - all between the
hours of 10pm to sun up. The roads won't be deserted. Cars will be
scarce, but you wouldn't have to wait more than a few minutes for another
one to appear from either direction.

As for killers...I've never met any. But no guarantees, sorry. ^_^
