In Italy the term for clarinet is male: "il clarinetto" o "il clarino" (in
bands).

Some years ago I've played as guest in a popular band. I've seen an old
player with a metal clarinet. The sound of that clarinet was something
horrible.
The old player told me that they used to call that clarinet "la clarina".
"Clarina" is the female version of "clarino".
