interview
that he had recently listened to a tape of himself doing the Debussy Premiere
Rapsodie with the orchestra and thought it was excellent. There were a
number of queries about that, but no recording ever surfaced. >>

There is a tape of the Debussy Rhapsodie, but I don't think Marcellus ever
said it was excellent. He hated that broadcast! When it was rebroadcast about
10 years ago nationally, he told us we could listen to it but to remember
that "there were several student performances with orchestra in the library
that were probably better." Of course, he was exaggerating, but it is clearly
not his very best playing. As he explained it to me, he had had all of his
top teeth removed not long before those concerts.

The Cleveland Orchestra has released several collections of radio broadcasts.
The one which is still available is the Szell 100th anniversary set. 6 CDs of
live performances, all with Marcellus, including the Schubert Octet, Mahler
9, Sibelius 4 and En Saga, etc. It's not cheap but worth it. Check the
Cleveland Orchestra website.

As for the masterclass tapes, anyone who goes to Evanston can hear them at
the NU library. I engineered the recordngs of the last two summer
masterclasses and the masters came out very good, although I don't know what
the library eventually did with them. They could have dubbed them and spoiled
them, who knows? If I had thought about it I would have made copies for
myself. Never thought about it.

Someone taped Karl Leister's masterclass my freshman year at NU. I would
really like to hear that too. It was amazing. I have never heard anyone play
Beethoven 6 like that. We were in awe.
