Anna has some great pointers here, Laura. I meant to take a tiny bit of
very fine (about 600) sand paper and sand the reed from 1/8 inch away from
the tip out toward the very tip. I would avoid going against the grain
because you risk trashing the reed that way.
The only thing I would add to what Anna said would be to use an embouchure
more similar to an alto or tenor sax embouchure. This would make your top
teeth the balance point instead of your bottom teeth. What to do with the
bottom lip & teeth? Fold lip over teeth in the usual manner, form a seal,
but keep jaw "dropped". This is how I form a bass clarinet embouchure.
