It all depends upon the purpose of your purchase....

Time passes and unfortunately, it is now clear that
most past edition have been unsatisfactory.

In Georgina Dobree's editorial note on the Sonata
in the Kevin Meyhew edition 1999, she praises the
engraver of the Durand edition, Charles Douin,
for faithfully following the composer's manuscript
- even to the point of copying his mistakes.

I shall be happy to scan this essay and
send off-list to anyone who wants it.

Unfortunately, this is a composite edition
also including Lefevre's 12th Sonata
and Debussy's Rhasodie and Petite Piece

[*Saint-Saens Sonata: Have you seen the autograph?
He had the habit of writing the key signature at the top of the page
and not on subsequent systems. Forgetfully, some accidentals
are worryingly missing from the Durand edition - and the autograph
The finale is quite different. He added a bit and chopped out a bit
It is quite surprising! All will be revealed if you buy Georgina Dobree's
new revised edition
based on the autograph, published by Kevin Meyhew Ltd, ]

I'm planning to buy a copy of the Saint-Saens sonata. JWPepper
has the "Masters Music Publications" edition for $9.95 and the
Chester edition for $13.95. Luyben has those plus the Durand
edition for $24.95. Can anyone comment on the merits of these
various editions?
