Fred, although your friend doesn't describe his breath control problem in terms
of resistance, unless there are physical respiratory implications, he seems to
encounter excessive resistance in maintaining his air flow. I don't think it
matters what notation he is playing, long tones or arpeggios, he should be able
to blow through a normal 4 bar phrase of reasonable dynamic range with no
problem. I concur with you that he should try a few mouthpiece/reed setups
just to see if the condition changes. If it doesn't, look the horn over
carefully for sneaky leak that he may be compensating for. If possible,
he might be able to try someone elses horn just to eliminate that possibility.
