This discussion is sparking 3 main thoughts.

When in discussion of tone quality with a student, i find i HAVE to play
examples.
And ask the student for descriptive words.
In that context, the terms have some overlapping meaning.

The trouble with recordings is there is always some level of distortion
or limitation. The comparison then can be obscured by the equipment and
technique.

I have judged the same string competition several years now, as one of 3
who are to agree on the 'best of class'.
Always during the course of the event, i find in our discussions about
the merits of one performance over another that some judges seem to
regard tone quality seperate of the music selection. "A's sound was
better than B". and i reply, "A's sound was 'bigger (or whatever), but
B's sound fit the music."
