Thank you all for your suggestion/comments concerning my student's
headaches. I am very slow responding but I did read all your letters. This
student came with her mother to a lesson yesterday so I was able to ask a
few more questions. She says she sometimes gets headaches when she's out in
the sun too. She gets headaches playing clarinet when she tries playing
through a piece without stopping for long breaks between phrases.(I'm
talking about very short exercises too. She's a beginner and plays
C-clarinet). I suggested to her mother that she take her daughter to a
doctor with her clarinet. My student says she enjoys playing when she
doesn't get a headache, but she did admit it's hard to practice when it's so
sunny and nice outside! She's 10 years old and in the 4th grade. I also had
her sit for her lesson. (It's normal in Germany that the student always
stands for lessons). Perhaps she's not relaxed enough when she plays which
causes the headaches (?) BTW, her mouthpiece/reed setup is easy blowing so
it couldn't be that, but she's straining somehow anyway.
Thanks again for your help,
Cindy in Germany
