The Yamaha Allegro models are available only through selected dealers, and
never through mail order. They fall between the intermediate and pro
models. We carry them in the store where I work. The Allegro saxes are
built entirely in Japan, not assembled in Grand Rapids, but in most
respects are the -52 series design. They feature gold lacquer, rather than
the clear lacquer standard on the -52 series. They also have better
quality pads, a better mouthpiece and case, and a five year warrantee. The
biggest difference is that they have what is, in essence, the NECK of the
-62 series horns. In my own trials (I have to be knowledgeable of our
products, don't I?) I find them to have a "warmer" sound (Sorry, Dan, but I
can't think of another way to describe it in 9000 words or less!) than the
-52's. Other than that, they play much the same, which is NOT a bad thing.
The hard rubber mouthpiece they provide is basically a Selmer C* clone. By
the way, my own personal tenor is a YTS-52 (although I COVET the new Selmer
Series III!).

The Allegro clarinets play very nicely, too. I think they fall between the
YCL-52 and -62 models also. They have an adjustable thumbrest and
silver-plated keys with GOLD-PLATED POSTS! (It's a look, but not for
everyone.)

All Allegro series instruments are sold at one price only. They cannot be
discounted. The price is between list price and what we advertise the
intermediates for on sales. As far as the saxes are concerned, my personal
opinion is that they are worth the extra money over the intermediates.

The above information is supplied for informational purposes only, and not
with commercial profit intent (I'm not on commission, anyway!).

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
