Our community band is currently "experiencing" Grainger's Molly On The Shore.
What a fabulous clarinet part! I have the luxury of playing with a gentleman
who blends beautifully with me. It is so energizing to get through that piece
and know that we've played it, and played it well. I am looking forward to
performing it.

If any of you younger players would like a work out in staccato playing, this
is a piece you should request from your director.

I find it fascinating that Grainger chose to eschew the traditional Italian
completely in his notatin. Markings such as "louden lots" and "slow up a
little" make every bit as much sense as "molto crescendo" and "poco
ritardando", but we're just not used to seeing them written that way. Even the
piccolo part is actually written as "small flute".
