There were many clarinet experimenters in Germany.
Ernest Schmidt who cooperated with Louis Kolbe. Amongst other things:
"The bell which, in any case, serves as decorative rather than acoustic
purposes was omitted, so that the lower end of this instruments is
straight, as in a flute.
This is taken from "The Clarinet" by Oscar Kroll.
