Subj: [kl] Metal clarinets . . . in the Arizona Sun! (Ouch!)

Hello, Clarinet List.

I've never been a clarinet, nor woodwind player, and
haven't played piano in years, but I am a composer. I've
heard several not-really-funny stories about Marching Band
students, being required to practice their playing and
marching, here in the Arizona Sun, during the summer, when
it's 105 to 115 degrees F (40 to 46 degrees C) in direct
sunlight. Ouch!

Of course, this IS the state, where mothers have a VERY
high success rate of getting their little children to eat their
vegetables!

"If you don't eat your broccoli, we'll go down to the
playground, and I'll MAKE you play on the metal slides,
when you're wearing your short pants!"

"No! No! NO! I'll eat all the broccoli! Anything
but that!"

"And then, you have to practice the Mozart Clarinet
Concerto, or I'll make you join the school's Marching
Band! Either Classical Clarinet, or Marching Band!
You decide!"

"But last time, my old plastic clarinet melted in the
Sun, all over my hands, and scalded me! No, no,
NO! I'll learn the Mozart!"

And you thought, that just because we're in the hot desert,
that we don't have good musicians! This might explain why
we have so many fine, classically trained Tuba Players!
(Hmmm?)
