Subj: [kl] Clarinet gender in Japan

This was just my experience, but I did a class for Buffet Crampon in
Japan.

There were about 16 girls and 6 boys. So I said, there aren't many
boys, are there?

So they said, no, in fact there are very many. Usually, no boys. (I
don't know how true this is, but it was what I was told by the person I
asked.)

When I told this story to a feminist friend of mine in England, she was
horrified. I said, but, I thought you'd be pleased that the women have
a good opportunity of employment in Japan as clarinet players.

No! she said. Don't you see? It means that clarinet playing is thought
so menial that it's only good enough for women.
