Lars,
Art Benade speculated (an educated speculation) that one reason most metal clarinets did not sound the same as wooden was the effect of turbulence around the tonehole; very few metal clarinets had any chamfering (undercutting) where the tonehole met the bore.

The reference is buried somewhere in the Benade Archives; I may have a copy of the notes he took on the subject at home. I'll look this evening.
