Scratching the tip

The question frequently asked was: The factory also cuts the reeds, so
what happens to those reed tips?

My answer at the time was I thought they have very sharp cutters.

Anyway , I scratched the tips of NEW reeds.

It worked. The reeds played easier than before.

This morning I tried again, with five brand new reeds.
After giving them the sandpaper treatment, they worked.
I won't say they are perfect. But whereas before they didn't play at
all, now they play.
Of course one can fix the reed to their own usage.
There is something else I do: If you put the reed on a piece glass, and
move the finger from the glass onto the reed, you will feel a little
step up.
I take some very fine sandpaper, a thin strip and just thin out the tip
a bit. But just the tip.
