Mark, this was the type of clipper that i used when I was too lazy to get
out the sand paper. I found that these reeds just didn't last as long or
respond as well as harder reeds that were not clipped, or those I took time
to sand. Also, yesterday, when I cut Bb reeds off at the butt to make Eb
reeds, the did extend over the rails, but played just fine. I do plan to
use harder reeds later with the Eb, but right now, I'm just messing around
with it. Anecdotal evidence? yes. But, that is how it happened for me.
As for sanding outwards towards the tip only ruining the good reeds, well,
everything I do only ruins the good reeds, never the bad ones. ; ) Also, i
have experimented with #600 carbon paper and it seems to keep me from
over-sanding.
Just my $.02
