I think you did fine, especially if you didn't have to go spend money on an
overhaul. Student quality eefers in good condition aren't that easy to find,
so IMHO they're worth more "in the wild" than the very common B-flats. Pawn
shop clarinets cost more than flea market clarinets, but the pawn shop
instruments are generally in cleaner, better condition. Also, IMHO, you're
the right type of customer for that market, since your playing experience
means that you would have spotted anything seriously wrong with the
instrument before you bought it.

When I brag about the low prices I spend for stuff, bear in mind that I'm
often buying old instruments in poor condition. Most of them are inexpensive
because they're either commonplace student instruments that I use for repair
practice, or else they're formerly-fine old ones that most people would
probably consider "interesting" today, rather than the most desirable modern
models. One advantage to being an amateur -- my instruments don't have to
pass a conductor's Gag Reflex Test.
