<< David Blumberg reported that this lick was described as the hardest in
the orchestral literature. I'm here to tell ya - the opening of "Porgy &
Bess" gives it a run for its money. 5 sharps, all articulated - who could
ask for anything more? Well, maybe the out-of-control conductor, 20
points over the printed tempo! (yes, we do it on A clarinets! Sorry, Dan!) >>

I was thinking about this subject yesterday as well. Although I played
"Catfish Row" yesterday, that lick didn't even occur to me! I guess our tempo
was sane (Karl Krelove was there, perhaps he can be the judge of the tempo).
At least, no one can hear it. When I did the whole opera on tour, Richie
Hawley and I used to play one measure apiece. .. that usually worked ok.
Never did try the A clarinet. I did transpose all the A clarinet stuff in
Rhapsody in Blue yesterday, however, so please send all hate mail directly to
the Princeton Chamber Symphony.

Anyway, I came up with a few passages from hell that compare with Gypsy
Baron. Obviously, there are lots of pieces with long, difficult things, but
we are talking about little teeny spots that make your life suck!

Sibelius: Pohjola's Daughter (nightmare)
Respighi: Church Windows (there are a few spots in here, I think the hardest
one isn't exposed)
Rossini/Respighi: La Boutique Fantasque (those who have seen it will know the
spot towards the end)
