I had 5 wonderful weeks on a lecture tour of the US and met a lot of
wonderful clarinet teachers including Dave McClune at Jackson and Becky
Chappell at Anderson University in Indiana. Becky holds the position
formerly held by Jerry Pierce who was also the President of the Clarinet
Society and she said that she enjoys playing klezmer. Jerry, as you all
know, died of cancer a number of years ago but his wife, also a
clarinetist and basset hornist, still lives in Anderson. I still miss
Jerry.

At Notre Dame I was sitting listening to a very nice player work on the
Debussy Rhapsodie and when he came out I complimented him on his lovely
sound. He thanked me but then said that he was working hard to get a
nice dark sound. We had a little conversation on that and they are
still cleaning his blood off the walls. Good player, though.

In driving through Nebraska, my wife and I spent the night in Kearney
where the local symphony was doing a concert of Williams, Sousa, and
some other things. Nice little group. Wonderful to hear such well
played music in America's heartland.

Ate in a splendid Basque restaurant in Winnemucca, NV. Absolutely first
class food and preparation. What happened to all the Stuckey shops that
used to line the interstates? Did they go out of business.

Also saw and had a lovely dinner with Dave Ross of Univ. Texas at El
Paso. That school is very fortunate to have a player like him.

>From time to time I read the bulletin board of Klarinet and was not
surprised to see many, many messages about getting a nice dark sound or
being told that they were buying clarinet xxx because it has a nice dark
sound. They were only saying that to get me upset, you know.
