Well, in my band there are 10 clarinetists, all of them female, except one
male, who is last chair, if that means anything. In my orchestra, with a
rather extended clarient section, two out of five are male. One doubles on
first with me, the other plays the "extra" parts. In the other orchestra,
one out of three is male and he's at the bottom also. So in my city, the
youth clarinetists mostly female, and the males are lower on the pecking
order. We have 3 main professionals in my city too...two out of three are
male. Although it's a little harder to determine, it seems to me that the
one female is the lesser one. Interesting, no?
