Subj: [kl] Krommer's Partita in F Major (not op. 57)
Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 22:28:20 -0400

I plan to release the .MUS and MIDI files of a partita in F Major by Franz
Krommer, but not his Op. 57 (that's already on my Web page), sometime
during the next week. It is written for nine winds and is quite appealing.
It came to me as a microfilm of Krommer's autograph thanks to the
assistance of a most helpful music librarian at the National Library of
Austria and has offered me quite a bit of amusement and enjoyment in going
from handwritten parts to a computer-generated score.

Someone else marked the errors after its composition -- mostly
miscalculated multi-measure rests. It took me a while to realize that the
funny X's and O's were notations put there by an editor or critic, not
Krommer himself. I counted 26 marked errors altogether, including two
which needed some recomposition -- but those three measures make all the
difference! Just think what great stuff he would have written had he been
able to call me in from time to time for artistic consultation! 8-)

All thirteen of his partitas were published by Dufaut et Dubois in the mid
1820s, according to Roger Hellyer, so I won't be able to claim a REAL world
premier performance of this piece, but I'll keep poking around. Maybe some
magnificent unpublished manuscript will yet find its way into my mailbox!

In any case, back to rehearsal and the boys in the box. Watch this space!

Oliver
