Paul--

Welcome to the list. I have been on for some time now, but it's nice to
know that there are
other clarinetists and music majors that have studied or are studying at
UCSD. I completed
my BA in 1982 there, and studied with both Ed Yadzinski and Bill Powell
(currently at Cal Arts).

The only advice that I will offer is to take advantage of all the musical
opportunities that
you can. The UCSD Music Department is small, but there are other
opportunities in the San Diego
area. Good luck.

Subject: [kl] Nielsen Concerto

Hi, my name's Paul Miller. I'm new to the list, so I thought that I should
introduce myself. I'm 19 and a clarinet major at UCSD. I'm studying with
Bob Zellickman (an excellent teacher, by the way, and I highly reccomend
him). I have a question for whoever is so inclined to answer... I've been
cursed with a naturally slow tongue, and, as the subject line indicates, I'm
working on the Nielsen concerto. In many places, i have to switch to brush
(or double) tonguing to get enough speed. The problem is, with brush
tonguing, it's hard for me to move between octaves cleanly, and it's also
difficult to play cleanly at the high range of the horn. So my questions
are: a.) does anyone else use this technique, and b.) what should i do to
clean up these issues?

Thanks so much!
