Subj: [kl] Clarinet in Cowboy Music

Recently a friend and I acquired a number of CDs of Cowboy Music. We were
listening to the group Wylie and the Wild West and found that they use a lot
of clarinet music in the accompaniment. In fact, in a number of places they
use clarinet where a fiddle would be used traditionally. Then we learned
that Don Edwards, who is a very big "star" in cowboy music circles, also
uses clarinet quite a bit in his arrangements.

Obviously clarinet isn't a traditional country music or cowboy music
instrument. Is anyone else familiar with these recordings? I'm curious
about how they came to use clarinets? Also, since my friend and I are
thinking about doing some cowboy music arrangements on the guitar I'm
thinking about adding clarinet to the mix.
