I just received a PolyCrystal mouthpiece from Pyne/Clarion. It works
best with a 3-3.5 . I tested it with LaVoz MedHard, and also the Buffet
Prestiege 3. Both work well, and give a clear dark tone. Other
strengths such as LaVoz medium blow much harder, and the tone is ok, I'm
afraid that the softer reeds will wear out faster, but the harder reeds
work better. I have not tried multiphonics yet, as I usually use softer
reeds for that. The price of the mouthpiece is good, $32.50. And it
looks like crystal, but without the weight. I have to put a mouthpiece
cushion, that softens the vibrations on the teeth. A transparent one
wouldn't detract from the clear look, like my BG pad does. But, right
now, I love the sound! I played a concert this week on it, and I was
really happy with the response of the mouthpiece.
For my students, though, I was really looking for a mouthpiece that I
could use for a real beginner, in a similar price range, only playing
for about 6 months, and this is better for a more accomplished player.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what could be a good mouthpiece
at a good price?

Thanks,

Rachael Orbach
