Records by David Glazer were amongst the first I collected about 30 years ago
and I still enjoy them. Two are LP recordings issued by Turnabout which was
owned by Vox. They are TV 34151 S (stereo) - Weber Fm Concerto (No1),
Concertino Op 26 and Quintet Op 34 and TV 340938 which has Stamitz Concerto
#3 (along with bassoon and flute concerti by the same composer). Also on
Hummel and Weber Quintets with the Kohon Quartet of NY University on Vox
DL960 (mono). The Weber quintet recording is the same as TV 34151. Also a
couple of Concert Disc (mono) recordings by the NY Woodwind quintet with
works including the Nielsen quintet and by Ingolf Dahl, Alvin Etler, Elliot
Carter and Samuel Barber amongst others. The sound of these recordings which
I think were made around 1960 is a bit dated but the playing sounds fresh as
ever - they were really inspiringly "modern" when I bought them. I notice
that most have been released on CD as "The best of the NYWQ Vol 1 & 2" on a
budget price label called "Boston Skyline". I heartily reccommend them
especially at budget price. There's also a budget Laserlight CD reissue
which has Glazer playing the Mozart concerto with the English Chamber
Orchestra cond. Geoffrey Simon.
Klarinet Archives record that Glazer was rumoured to have died (posting by
Dan Leeson in Sept '96) but was reportedly still teaching three years ago -
not bad for a (then) 84 year old! I hope he's still alive and well.
Tim.
