Tom Ridenour told me (and I can confirm from the way his mouthpieces play)
that a long curve/close tip mouthpiece is the way to go, at least for those
whose embouchure and concept are like Tom's. The tone of these mouthpieces
seems deeper, with more carrying power.

As Tom also says, this facing requires perfectly balanced reeds and a longer,
perfectly graduated vamp. I played one for a while and found, not being a
full-time player, that I preferred a medium length, medium tip facing, which
is more forgiving.

Equally important, I think, is your concept of playing. Tom is an excellent
player with strong opinions about what works best. He prefers a setup that
pretty much plays itself. When I play one of his mouthpieces, with a good
reed, on a Leblanc Opus or Selmer Signature, I like the result very much.
You blow in here, and it comes out there, sounding good. Nevertheless, I
continue to play (Opperman-tweaked) Buffet R-13s, even though they take more
attention to the mechanics of playing, because I feel more intimately
connected with the tone and can vary it over a wider range.

Only my opinion, for my ears and on my instruments.
