In my high school band, we have a quite different way of placing people in
diiferent chairs. We have roughly 75 clarinets in our section(marching band)
that is separated into 5 bands. Initially all freshmen and sophmores(that are
not in the top 2 bands) are auditioned after marching season. They are placed
in band where seating is later arranged after further auditioning. For the
top band, we rarely audition since our director knows how good we are, mostly
from prior hearing during class and from our private teachers(everyone takes
private lessons if they are in the top 2 bands). The seating goes from 1st to
last straight on without any special arranging. I like this because you can
clearly see who's in front of you. Also because everyone in our band is top
quality, we are able to have strength in every part.
