When I was in HS, (also 50 years ago), the Band Director established a
challenge system. Anyone could challenge the player on their right, for
clarinets, or left as appropriate.
The Director would hold a 30 minute or so audition, (challenge), session
and declare the results at the end of the session. Result? The first
chair first clarinet or trumpet or whatever should have been the best
player.. I recall being challenged about every year..
