My college clarinet teacher in the late 60's, Richard Pickar, who is retired
from the Houston Symphony, used to be in amazing shape. He was into jogging
and bicycling way before all the jogging stuff was in vogue. His studio was
on the fourth floor of the music building and if he was on the bottom floor,
he would say "Come on, let's go," and would run up all four flights. By the
time I would get up there, huffing and puffing, he would have picked up his
clarinet and be playing something and he was not in the least winded.
Occasionally (depending on the symphony schedule) he would bicycle from
Houston to Huntsville (about 75 miles). If you went to his house around
lunch time, he would fix lunch for you- some kind of health food with
cucumbers, goats milk, and I don't know what else. He said that the better
condition you are in, the better breath control you will have and the better
control you will have of the physical things you need to do play the
instrument. I think there is a lot to be said for that although I do not do
nearly as much as I should in that regard.
