Teri,

This piece is one that is more interesting to listen to than play.

I was introduced to the piece in band arrangement as undergrad, and got a
kick out doing the minor research to find out the original lyrics
meanings. I bought a recording and cleaned house while singing along for
several years.
That was the ideal age and circumstance.

As a more knowledgable (and crotchety) adult played it last season. Big
deal. I still remembered a lot of the lyrics. Not fun even in rehearsal
where i could sing along ; ) I wore earplugs in certain sections even
on the concert.

Ideal-age concept-- came while visiting with my clarinet coach after an
orchestral concert that included Frank symphony in d. His 12-year old
daughter and her best friend had attended the concert and were entirely
in love with the music. His comment to me, "they are the ideal age for
the work."

Maybe the repeats make more sense if also staged with dancers. I
overheard the director of a ballet company discussing the collaberation
done with live orchestra and chorus complained, "The chorus was so
undisciplined. They talked all the time when not singing. I couldn't
believe that adults would be so unprofessional"
