In my band, things run a little differently. I'm not sure if it is just
our section or the whole band. One of my best friends, who sits first chair,
asked me to join the group a year ago. In my discussions with the director
before I joined, He found out that I have advanced degrees in music.
Therefore, I was placed next to her in the 2nd chair position. A year later,
I'm doing all the solos except the easy ones. Her basic words were, 'You can
take all the technical hard solos and I'll take the slow easy ones.' She is
still sitting first chair. So, I guess for all practical purposes, I am
first chair even though I'm not sitting in it! This doesn't really bother
me. I guess that our band doesn't always have the best player sitting in
first chair, but the director does round out the sections with strength on
each part.
