I can't really speak for the whole south, but in Lubbock Texas, almost no
one under 50 butchers words like that. I agree that there are plenty of
people who do, I guess I'm just trying to stay away from the stereotype that
all southerners, especially Texans, are gun-tootin' cowboys with a huge
accent. Granted, there will be some variance in speech, as is inherent in
any widespread dialect (the Chinese dialect become so different it split
into two more or less distinct languages- Mandarin and Cantonese), but I
think with mass media, etc., most decently educated people pronounce words
relatively similarly. That's just my experience *shrug*:). But for all of
you who live in foreign countries, or even in the northern States, please
know that not all Texans ride horses and live on a ranch:).

Keep in mind that right here in the U.S. there are some variants on
pronunciation, such as in the deep south, a PEE-a-nist would be a PEE-a-ner
player. A clar-i-NET is a CLAIR-net, and a flute is a fah-LOOT. Fetch mah
fiddle an' lets do the Cotton eye'd Joe! YEE-ha y'all.
