At my school, we use our very old tubas, baritones, bass clarinet, tenor
saxophones, and french horns as practice instruments. These instruments are
not is great condition. They are very old and are what we call "home horns"
as opposed to "school horns." The home horns are checked out to kids and
they keep them at home for the entire school year. The instruments are
maintained in "playing condition" but they are not relaquered and dents are
not taken out. If the student damages the instrument they pay for the repair
of it (school horn and home horn). The school pays for normal wear and tear
such as pads, corks, etc. This way the kids do not need to take a large
instrument on the bus. If we don't have enough practice horns, the younger
bus riders get them first. High school kids who drive cars to school or kids
picked up by their parents daily will only get a home horn if we have enough.
We don't throw out old horns, we just make them practice horns until they
will no longer function in that capacity.
